Salt marshes are an integral part of the Île de Ré and take the form of large basins dug into natural clay. Formerly the island’s main activity in the 19th century, there are now just over a hundred of salt makers.

More than two centuries ago, there were over a 1,000 salt makers on the island. 20% of he Île de Ré territory was occupied by this activity, producing over 30,000 tons of salt. As a result of the innovation of fresh products preservation, war and the draining of the marshes, salt production declined. Consequently, salt makers started withdrawing from this profession, seeing prices plummet !

Thanks to the help of the Cooperative, the Charente-Maritime Chamber of Agriculture and the Île de Ré Federation of Municipalities, salt marshes are once again developing with young salt makers and their innovation moving in. Today, we can see that this reinforcement has saved this industry, which is now a part of the territory’s image.

Located in the north of the island, it is easy to cycle through this exceptional landscape. From Loix to the Portes-en-Ré, by way of the marshes, there are 17 kilometers explore ! In the middle of the salt marshes, you can see a large number of birds and miles of salt all along the way. If you happen to come across any salt makers along the way, they will be delighted to answer your questions, and to clarify elements about the marshes. It is a soothing and rewarding stroll that is sure to recharge your battery.

Throughout the tour, you will discover the impact of salt production on the island, as well as the methods used ad the operation of this activity. Then, a guide will take you on a tour of the salt marshes. You will see the beauty of this landscape !

Entry to the museum is free for children under 8 years old. It costs 2.70 € fro children aged 8 to 11 and 5 € for those aged 12 to 18. For adults, it costs 5.50 €.
